MRI vs CT Scan: Which One Do You Need?
Both make detailed pictures of the inside of your body. The short answer: MRI is best for soft tissue such as the brain, spine, nerves and joints. CT is faster and best for bones, lungs, stones and emergencies.
MRI and CT at a Glance
| MRI Scan | CT Scan | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Strong magnet and radio waves | X-rays taken from many angles |
| Radiation | None | Small dose |
| Time in the machine | 20 to 45 minutes | Usually under 10 minutes |
| Noise | Loud knocking, ear protection given | Quiet |
| Best for | Brain, spinal cord, discs, ligaments, cartilage, liver, pelvis | Head injury, bleeding, lungs, stones, fractures, abdomen in emergencies |
| Metal implants | Must be checked first; pacemakers may not be allowed | Usually no problem |
| Cost | Generally higher | Generally lower |
When Doctors Choose MRI
- Back pain with leg pain (sciatica) or a suspected slip disc: MRI LS Spine
- Knee injury, ligament or meniscus tear: MRI Knee
- Seizures, long-standing headache, brain lesions: MRI Brain
- Bile duct stones or blockage: MRCP
- Anal fistula before surgery: MRI Fistulogram
When Doctors Choose CT
- Head injury or sudden stroke symptoms: NCCT Brain (fast, shows bleeding)
- Lung problems, long cough, fibrosis: HRCT Chest
- Kidney stone pain: CT KUB
- Sinus problems before surgery: CT PNS
- Abdominal pain, tumour staging: CECT Whole Abdomen
Which Is Safer?
Both are safe when done for the right reason. MRI uses no radiation, so it is often preferred for children, young adults and repeat scans. The main MRI safety rule is no metal in the scan room, so tell the staff about pacemakers, implants, clips or old surgery. CT uses a small, controlled X-ray dose, which is worth it when quick answers are needed, such as after an accident.
In pregnancy, ultrasound is the first choice. MRI without contrast may be used if your doctor advises. CT is avoided unless truly necessary. Always tell us if you are or could be pregnant.
Can I Choose MRI Instead of CT?
The test depends on what your doctor needs to see. A CT can miss a small disc problem that MRI shows clearly, and an MRI is slower and less useful for lung disease or fresh bleeding. If you are unsure, bring your prescription and our radiologist can guide you and your doctor.
Common Questions
Is MRI better than CT?
Neither is better overall. MRI is better for soft tissue detail; CT is better for bones, lungs and speed.
Which is more expensive, MRI or CT?
MRI usually costs more than CT because the machine and scan time are greater. Call us for today’s price for your exact test.
