The Procedure
Registration & Screening
We check your prescription, creatinine report and ask about allergies, diabetes, kidney problems and pregnancy.
Oral Contrast
If advised, you drink the contrast solution slowly over about an hour. It helps the bowel show clearly on the scan.
Scanning
A cannula is placed in your arm, you lie on your back and hold your breath for a few seconds as contrast is injected. A warm feeling is normal.
Observation
You rest briefly, the cannula is removed, and you can eat and go home. Drink plenty of water for the rest of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CT better than ultrasound for the abdomen?
Ultrasound is usually the first test because it is quick and has no radiation. CT gives a more complete picture and is advised when ultrasound is unclear, or for tumours, staging and complications.
Why does the visit take about 2 hours?
Most of the time is spent drinking the oral contrast so it can reach the intestines. The scan itself is only 10 – 15 minutes.
Can I drink water before the scan?
Yes. Water is allowed during the fasting period. Please avoid food for 4 – 6 hours.
I am diabetic and take metformin. What should I do?
Tell us and your doctor when booking. Depending on your kidney function, your doctor may advise pausing metformin for a short time after the scan.
Can it be done during pregnancy?
CT of the abdomen is avoided in pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Ultrasound or MRI is usually preferred. Always tell our staff if you may be pregnant.
