Watch: How to Get Ready for Your MRI
One minute, in simple steps. Remove all metal, change into the gown, lie still.
What Is an MRI Scan?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses a strong magnet and radio waves to make detailed pictures of soft tissues: the brain, spinal cord, discs, ligaments, muscles and organs. It uses no X-rays and no radiation, so it can be repeated when needed.
Doctors usually ask for MRI when they need more detail than an X-ray, ultrasound or CT can give, for example to check a slip disc, a ligament tear, a brain lesion or a liver mass.
Before You Come
- Bring your doctor’s prescription and any old reports or films.
- Tell us if you have a pacemaker, cochlear implant, metal implant, clip or stent, or have had any surgery.
- Remove all metal: jewellery, hairpins, watch, belt, phone, keys, cards.
- Fasting is needed only for some tests (for example MRCP and abdomen). We will tell you when you book.
- Most MRI scans take 20 to 45 minutes. Contrast studies take a little longer.

MRI Questions Patients Ask
Is MRI safe?
Yes. MRI uses no radiation. The main safety rule is keeping metal out of the scan room, which is why our staff check every patient before the scan.
Will I feel anything during the MRI?
No pain. The machine makes loud knocking sounds, so we give you ear protection. You only need to breathe normally and keep still.
I feel scared in closed spaces. Can I still have an MRI?
Tell us when you book. A family member can stay nearby, our technician talks to you during the scan, and you can stop at any time using the call bell.
MRI or CT, which one do I need?
Your doctor decides, but in short: MRI is better for soft tissue like the brain, spine and joints; CT is faster and better for bones, lungs and emergencies. Read our guide MRI vs CT scan.
When will I get my report?
Most MRI reports are ready the same day. Urgent cases are reported faster. Ask at the counter or on WhatsApp.
