RGU & MCU Test in Patna
Retrograde urethrogram (RGU) and micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) at JP Diagnostic, Bailey Road. X-ray tests with contrast that show the urethra and bladder, for urine flow problems in adults and children. Performed by a radiologist, by appointment.
When Are RGU and MCU Advised?
Urethral Stricture (RGU)
Thin or weak urine stream, straining, or narrowing of the urethra after injury or infection.
Urine Reflux (MCU)
Repeated urine infections in children, to check whether urine flows back up to the kidneys.
Problems in Boys (MCU)
Swollen kidneys on ultrasound or poor stream, to look for posterior urethral valves.
Before or After Surgery
Planning urethral surgery, or checking healing afterwards.
RGU vs MCU
The two are often done together, one after the other.
| Feature | RGU | MCU |
|---|---|---|
| How contrast is given | Gently through the opening of the urethra | Into the bladder through a thin catheter |
| Shows | The front (anterior) urethra | Bladder, reflux and the back (posterior) urethra while passing urine |
| Time | About 15 minutes | About 30 minutes |
The Procedure
Check & Explain
We review the prescription and urine report, ask about infection and allergies, and explain each step. For children, a parent stays with the child.
Contrast
Using sterile technique and a numbing lubricant jelly, contrast is introduced through the urethra (RGU) or a thin catheter (MCU). You may feel pressure or an urge to pass urine.
X-Rays
X-rays are taken from different angles. For MCU, images are also taken while you pass urine on the table.
Aftercare & Report
We give you written aftercare advice before you leave. Our radiologist reports the findings for your doctor.
