USG NT Scan (Nuchal Translucency) in Bihar
First trimester screening at JP Diagnostic performed at 11-14 weeks. Combined with blood tests, it assesses chromosomal anomaly risk across Patna, Gaya & Muzaffarpur.
What is the NT Scan?
A first trimester ultrasound measuring the fluid thickness at the back of the fetal neck (nuchal translucency) between 11 and 14 weeks. Combined with maternal serum markers (beta-hCG, PAPP-A), it calculates risk for Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome.
Nuchal Translucency
Measures the fluid-filled space behind the fetal neck. Increased thickness (>3mm or >99th percentile) indicates higher chromosomal risk.
Combined Screening
NT measurement + dual marker blood test (free beta-hCG, PAPP-A) provides 90-95% detection rate for trisomies with a 5% false positive rate.
Fetal Anatomy
Early assessment of nasal bone, heart rate, ductus venosus flow, and basic structures visible at this gestational age.
When Do You Need an NT Scan?
Recommended for all pregnancies, with increased importance for high-risk cases.
Universal Screening
- All pregnancies at 11-14 weeks gestation
- First pregnancy (primigravida)
- Advanced maternal age (>35 years)
- Family history of chromosomal anomalies
- Previous pregnancy with aneuploidy
- Consanguineous marriage
Risk Factors
- Abnormal first trimester screening history
- Known genetic carrier status
- Multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets)
- Structural abnormality seen on early scan
- Maternal diabetes or autoimmune disease
- IVF/assisted conception pregnancy
Genetic & Chromosomal
- Previous child with Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
- Previous child with Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
- Previous child with Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13)
- Parental chromosomal rearrangement (balanced translocation)
- Recurrent miscarriages
Additional Markers
- Absent nasal bone
- Reversed ductus venosus flow
- Tricuspid regurgitation
- Abnormal fetal heart rate
- Omphalocele or cystic hygroma
The Procedure
What to expect during your NT scan at JP Diagnostic. Total time: 30 to 45 minutes.
Check-in & Counseling
Bring your antenatal card, LMP date, and any previous ultrasound reports. Our fetal medicine radiologist explains the screening process and obtains informed consent.
NT Measurement & Scan
The sonographer confirms gestational age (CRL 45-84mm), measures NT in the midsagittal plane with fetus in neutral position, assesses nasal bone, heart rate, and visible anatomy. Doppler evaluates ductus venosus if indicated.
Report & Risk Assessment
NT measurement is combined with maternal age and blood markers (if dual marker done). A risk ratio is calculated. High-risk cases are counseled for NIPT or invasive testing (CVS/amniocentesis).
How to Prepare
Proper preparation ensures accurate NT measurement and reliable risk calculation.
✅ Do’s
- Schedule between 11-14 weeks (ideally 12-13 weeks)
- Bring your antenatal card and LMP date
- Get dual marker blood test (beta-hCG, PAPP-A) on the same day
- Wear loose, comfortable two-piece clothing
- Have a light meal before (not too full, not fasting)
- Bring your partner for support
❌ Don’ts
- Do not schedule before 11 weeks (NT not reliably measurable)
- Do not schedule after 14 weeks (NT no longer valid; consider quadruple marker)
- Do not apply oils or lotions on the abdomen
- Do not skip the dual marker blood test for combined screening
- Do not expect gender disclosure (illegal under PCPNDT)
Special Cases
| Condition | Required Preparation |
|---|---|
| Multiple Pregnancy | NT measured for each fetus; chorionicity must be determined |
| Obese Patients | Early morning appointment; TVS may supplement if needed |
| Previous Aneuploidy | Bring all previous pregnancy records and genetic counseling notes |
| IVF Pregnancy | Bring embryo transfer date for accurate dating |
| Poor Fetal Position | May need walk, wait, or return same day for proper NT view |
Duration & Report Timing
| Scan Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| NT Scan (Singleton) | 30 – 45 minutes |
| NT Scan (Twins) | 45 – 60 minutes |
| NT Scan + Dual Marker Blood Test | 45 – 60 minutes |
| NT Scan + Early Anatomy Survey | 45 – 60 minutes |
Safety & Risks
NT ultrasound is completely safe for mother and fetus when performed by qualified professionals.
- Zero radiation exposure
- No known harmful effects on fetus
- Used worldwide for over 30 years
- Non-invasive and painless
- Safe for extended examination time
- Measurement requires precise technique; operator-dependent
- Fetal position may require repeat attempt
- Emotional stress if high-risk result obtained
- Screening test, not diagnostic — 5% false positive rate
- Does not detect all chromosomal abnormalities
- Some fetuses with normal NT have aneuploidy
- Structural defects without chromosomal issues may be missed
⚠️ Legal Notice: Prenatal sex determination is strictly prohibited under the PCPNDT Act. JP Diagnostic complies fully with all legal requirements. We do not disclose fetal gender under any circumstances.

Expert Opinions
Why do fetal medicine specialists emphasize the NT scan?
The 11-14 week NT scan is the earliest opportunity to identify pregnancies at high risk for chromosomal abnormalities. When combined with the dual marker blood test, it offers the best first trimester screening with minimal false positives. Early detection gives parents time for informed decisions and further testing.
In our practice, we insist that every patient undergoes NT screening regardless of maternal age. Many chromosomal abnormalities occur in young mothers too. The scan also provides early reassurance and allows us to plan the pregnancy care pathway appropriately.
