USG Upper Abdomen in Bihar
Focused ultrasound of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys at JP Diagnostic. Essential for jaundice, gallstones, fatty liver, and abdominal pain evaluation across Patna, Gaya & Muzaffarpur.
What is a USG Upper Abdomen?
A targeted ultrasound examination focusing on the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys — the solid organs of the upper abdomen. It does not evaluate pelvic organs.
Liver & Gallbladder
Detects fatty liver, hepatitis, cirrhosis, gallstones, polyps, bile duct dilation, and liver masses with high accuracy.
Pancreas & Spleen
Evaluates pancreatic size, duct dilation, pancreatitis, cysts, and splenomegaly. Pancreatic visualization may be limited by bowel gas.
Kidneys
Assesses kidney size, cortical thickness, stones, hydronephrosis, and cysts. Upper pole masses and adrenal regions are also surveyed.

The Procedure
What to expect during your USG Upper Abdomen at JP Diagnostic. Total time: 15 to 20 minutes.
Check-in & Fasting Verification
Confirm 6-8 hours of fasting. Remove upper clothing and lie supine on the examination table. The sonographer applies warm gel to the right upper quadrant.
Organ Scanning
The transducer is systematically moved across the abdomen to evaluate the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys. You will be asked to hold your breath and turn on your left side for gallbladder and liver assessment.
Post-Scan & Report
Gel is wiped off. Dress and resume normal activities. The radiologist reviews images for gallstones, fatty liver, and organ size. Reports ready within 30 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about USG Upper Abdomen in Bihar.
Fasting empties the stomach and fills the gallbladder with bile, making gallstones and bile duct pathology visible. Food causes gallbladder contraction and releases gas into the duodenum, obscuring the pancreas and bile ducts.
Yes. Ultrasound is the primary screening tool for fatty liver, showing increased liver brightness (echogenicity) compared to the kidneys. It can grade severity as mild, moderate, or severe. FibroScan provides more precise quantification of liver fat and stiffness.
USG upper abdomen covers only the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys. USG whole abdomen additionally evaluates the urinary bladder, prostate (males), uterus/ovaries (females), and lower abdominal structures.
Ultrasound can detect gallbladder wall thickening, irregular masses, and stones >3cm that raise suspicion for cancer. However, CT or MRI is needed for staging and assessing spread. Early gallbladder cancer may be incidentally found during routine gallstone evaluation.
