USG Colour Doppler FWB in Bihar
Fetal wellbeing assessment with colour Doppler at JP Diagnostic — evaluating placental and fetal blood flow across Patna, Gaya & Muzaffarpur.
What is Colour Doppler FWB?
A specialized obstetric ultrasound using colour Doppler to assess blood flow in the umbilical artery, uterine arteries, middle cerebral artery (MCA), and ductus venosus — critical for monitoring fetal wellbeing and placental function.
Umbilical Artery
Assesses placental resistance. Elevated resistance indicates placental insufficiency and fetal growth restriction risk.
Middle Cerebral Artery
Evaluates fetal brain sparing effect. Used for fetal anemia detection and IUGR management.
Uterine Artery
Screening for pre-eclampsia risk. Notching and high resistance predict hypertensive disorders.
When Do You Need FWB Doppler?
High-Risk Pregnancy
- Suspected fetal growth restriction (FGR/IUGR)
- Decreased fetal movements
- Oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios
- Multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets)
- Previous pregnancy with IUGR or stillbirth
- Maternal hypertension or pre-eclampsia
Maternal Conditions
- Chronic hypertension
- Diabetes mellitus (pre-existing or gestational)
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Antiphospholipid syndrome
- Chronic kidney disease
- Advanced maternal age (>35 years)
Fetal Indications
- Fetal anemia (parvovirus, alloimmunization)
- Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)
- Fetal hydrops
- Abnormal umbilical cord insertion
- Single umbilical artery
Routine Screening
- Uterine artery Doppler at 11-14 weeks (pre-eclampsia screening)
- Uterine artery Doppler at 20-24 weeks
- Biophysical profile (BPP) component
- Weekly monitoring in high-risk pregnancies
The Procedure
Total time: 30 to 60 minutes depending on complexity.
Check-in & History
Bring all previous scan reports, antenatal card, and blood pressure records. Our fetal medicine specialist reviews risk factors and indications.
Doppler Assessment
Systematic evaluation: umbilical artery S/D ratio, PI, RI; middle cerebral artery PI and PSV; uterine artery notching; ductus venosus flow; amniotic fluid index; fetal biometry.
Report & Management Plan
Comprehensive report with Doppler indices, growth chart, and management recommendations. Urgent cases receive immediate obstetric liaison.
How to Prepare
✅ Do’s
- Bring all previous ultrasound and Doppler reports
- Bring antenatal card and recent blood pressure readings
- Wear comfortable loose clothing
- Eat normally — no fasting required
- Bring your partner for support
❌ Don’ts
- Do not skip this scan if advised by your obstetrician
- Do not apply oils or lotions on abdomen
- Do not come without previous reports for comparison
Duration & Report Timing
| Scan Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| FWB Doppler (Singleton) | 30 – 45 minutes |
| FWB Doppler (Twins) | 45 – 60 minutes |
| FWB Doppler + Biophysical Profile | 45 – 60 minutes |
| Uterine Artery Screening | 20 – 30 minutes |
Safety & Risks
- Colour Doppler uses diagnostic intensity levels
- No radiation exposure
- Safe when performed by qualified specialists
- ALARA principle followed (as low as reasonably achievable)
- Prolonged scan may cause mild maternal discomfort
- Fetal position may limit vessel visualization
- Emotional stress if abnormal flow detected
- Early changes may precede clinical symptoms
- Intermittent absent/reversed flow may be missed in brief sampling
- Technical factors (maternal obesity, fetal position) affect quality
