The Procedure
Registration
Show the prescription and old spine X-rays or MRI if any.
Change
Remove belts, keys and clothes with metal around the waist. A gown is provided.
Two Views
One image lying on your back (AP) and one on your side (lateral). Hold still and breathe out for a moment for each.
Report
Our radiologist reports the findings for your doctor.
How to Prepare
Bowel gas can overlap the lower spine, so a little preparation helps.

- Take a mild laxative the night before if your doctor or our staff advise it
- Bring the doctor’s prescription
- Tell us if you are or may be pregnant

Frequently Asked Questions
What does LS spine mean?
LS means lumbosacral, the lower back bones (lumbar vertebrae) and the sacrum at the base of the spine.
Can an X-ray show a slip disc?
Not directly. X-ray can show a narrowed disc space, but the disc and pressed nerves are seen on MRI.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Lower back X-rays are avoided in pregnancy unless essential. Always tell our staff if you may be pregnant.
