The Procedure
What to expect during your USG Lower Abdomen at JP Diagnostic. Total time: 15 to 25 minutes.
Check-in & Full Bladder
Arrive with a full bladder (drink 4-5 glasses of water 1 hour prior and hold). A full bladder pushes the uterus up and creates an acoustic window for pelvic organ visualization.
Scanning
Lie supine with lower abdomen exposed. Warm gel is applied. The transducer is moved across the suprapubic region to evaluate the bladder, uterus, ovaries (females), prostate (males), and appendix region. Measurements and images are recorded.
Post-Scan & Report
Gel is wiped off. You may empty your bladder. The radiologist reviews images and prepares your report with measurements of uterus, ovaries, endometrial thickness, or prostate volume.
How to Prepare
A full bladder is the most critical preparation requirement for lower abdomen ultrasound.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about USG Lower Abdomen in Bihar.
A full bladder pushes the uterus and ovaries up from behind the pubic bone into a position where ultrasound can visualize them clearly. It also pushes bowel gas away from the pelvic organs. Without a full bladder, the image quality is significantly degraded.
Lower abdomen USG (transabdominal) is performed on the belly surface with a full bladder. TVS (transvaginal) uses a slender probe inserted into the vagina with an empty bladder, providing much higher resolution images of the uterus and ovaries. TVS is preferred for infertility, early pregnancy, and detailed gynecological evaluation.
Yes, transabdominal ultrasound can detect pregnancy from approximately 5-6 weeks gestation. Earlier pregnancy may require TVS. The scan confirms intrauterine location, gestational sac, and viability.
Yes, especially in children and thin adults. A graded compression technique visualizes a non-compressible, thickened appendix (>6mm diameter). However, CT is more accurate in obese adults or when ultrasound is inconclusive. Ultrasound is preferred in pregnancy and children to avoid radiation.

Expert Opinions
When do leading specialists recommend USG Lower Abdomen?
For any woman presenting with pelvic pain, menstrual irregularity, or suspected ovarian pathology, transabdominal pelvic ultrasound is the essential first investigation. It provides immediate information about uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and ectopic pregnancy while remaining completely safe.
In male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms, lower abdomen ultrasound with PVR measurement helps us quantify prostate enlargement and bladder dysfunction. It is the cornerstone of BPH evaluation before initiating medical or surgical therapy.
