MRI Hand vs CT Hand vs X-Ray
Choosing the right modality ensures accurate diagnosis while minimizing radiation exposure.
| Feature | MRI Hand | CT Hand | X-Ray Hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiation | ✓ Zero | ✕ Present | ✕ Present |
| Tendon / Pulley Detail | ✓ Excellent | ✕ Limited | ✕ Cannot Visualize |
| Ligament Assessment | ✓ Superior | ✕ Limited | ✕ Cannot Visualize |
| Bone Detail | ✕ Moderate | ✓ Excellent | ✓ Good |
| Cost in Bihar | ₹5,000 – ₹12,000 | ₹2,500 – ₹4,500 | ₹300 – ₹800 |
| Early Arthritis / Erosions | ✓ Excellent | ✕ Limited | ✕ Late Detection Only |
MRI Hand is the modality of choice for tendon injuries, pulley ruptures, ligament tears, early arthritis, carpal tunnel, and soft tissue masses — without radiation risk.
The Procedure
What to expect during your MRI Hand Scan at JP Diagnostic. Total time: 25 to 40 minutes.
Check-in & Screening
Present your orthopedist’s or hand surgeon’s referral. We screen for pacemakers, implants, and metal fragments. Remove all jewelry, rings, bracelets, and watches. Remove nail polish if possible.
Positioning
Lie supine on the MRI table. Your hand is positioned in a dedicated extremity coil — either at your side or above your head in “superman” position for optimal imaging. The hand is placed in a neutral or slightly flexed position. Padding supports your arm.
Scanning
The table slides into the magnet. You must keep your hand completely still. The machine produces loud knocking sounds — earplugs or headphones are provided. Contrast may be injected via IV for evaluating masses, infection, inflammatory arthritis, or synovitis.
Post-Scan & Results
The table slides out. Dress and collect belongings. Preliminary review by our musculoskeletal radiologist before departure. Your detailed report is ready within 24 hours.
How to Prepare
Hand MRI requires specific preparation to ensure image clarity and patient safety.
✅ Do’s
- Remove all jewelry, rings, bracelets, and watches
- Remove nail polish and acrylic nails if possible
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal zippers
- Bring prior hand X-rays, CT scans, and operative notes
- Inform staff of any hand implants or plates
- Arrive 15 minutes before appointment
❌ Don’ts
- Do not wear bangles, kada, or religious metal wristbands
- Avoid tight-fitting sleeves that cannot be rolled up
- Do not bring electronic devices into the scan room
- Avoid hand lotions or creams on the day of scan
- Do not wear hair clips, bobby pins, or metal hair accessories
- Avoid caffeine if prone to anxiety or claustrophobia
Special Cases
| Condition | Required Preparation |
|---|---|
| Contrast MRI | Fasting 4 hours; kidney function test (creatinine) required |
| Claustrophobia | Request wide-bore MRI or mild oral sedation |
| Children | Sedation may be required; fasting 4-6 hours prior |
| Carpal Tunnel Evaluation | Bring nerve conduction study (NCV) reports |
| Post-Surgical Hand | Bring operative notes and implant details |
Duration & Report Timing
We understand the urgency of hand conditions and prioritize rapid reporting.
| Scan Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| MRI Hand Plain | 20 – 30 minutes |
| MRI Hand with Contrast | 30 – 45 minutes |
| Both Hands (Bilateral) | 35 – 50 minutes |
| MRI Hand + Wrist | 40 – 55 minutes |
| MRI Hand with Sedation | 1 – 1.5 hours |
Safety & Risks
Hand MRI is extremely safe, with specific precautions for implants and contrast use.
- No radiation exposure
- Safe for children and elderly
- No recovery time needed
- Can be repeated for monitoring healing or arthritis
- Loud acoustic noise during scan
- Need to keep hand completely still
- Warm sensation if contrast is injected
- Claustrophobia in standard bore magnets
- Pacemaker or ICD
- Non-MRI-safe hand implants or shrapnel
- Severe Gadolinium allergy (for contrast)
- Inability to cooperate or remain still
- Certain cochlear implants
💡 Safety First: If you have any metal implants from prior hand surgery (plates, screws, K-wires), inform us immediately. Most modern orthopedic implants are MRI-safe, but verification is essential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about MRI Hand Scan in Bihar.
Yes. MRI is excellent for detecting flexor tendon tears (FDS, FDP), retraction, and associated pulley injuries. It guides surgical planning for tendon repair and grafting.
Yes. MRI detects synovitis, bone marrow edema, and early erosions months before they are visible on X-ray. This early detection allows prompt initiation of disease-modifying therapy (DMARDs) to prevent joint destruction.
Gadolinium contrast highlights inflammation, infection, tumors, and synovitis. It is essential for evaluating rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis, ganglion cysts, and soft tissue masses.
Yes. MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing A2-A5 pulley ruptures in rock climbers and athletes. It assesses bowstringing of tendons and guides the decision between taping, splinting, or surgical repair.

Expert Opinions
When do leading hand specialists recommend an MRI Hand Scan?
Any patient with a lacerated flexor tendon, pulley injury, or gamekeeper’s thumb should undergo hand MRI. It is the only modality that reliably visualizes the digital pulleys and collateral ligaments, which are invisible on X-ray.
In rheumatoid arthritis, MRI detects synovitis and bone marrow edema months before radiographic erosions appear. Early MRI-guided therapy with DMARDs can prevent irreversible deformity and joint destruction.
For rock climbers and athletes with A2 pulley ruptures, MRI confirms the diagnosis and assesses bowstringing. It guides return-to-sport decisions and distinguishes partial from complete tears requiring surgery.
