What Is a CT Scan?

A CT Scan (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. It is much more detailed than a normal X-ray and can show bones, organs, blood vessels and soft tissues clearly in just a few seconds.

CT scans are widely used in emergency medicine, cancer diagnosis, trauma, brain stroke and many other conditions where quick and accurate imaging is needed.

Types of CT Scan Tests We Offer

We provide a wide range of CT Scan studies:

  • CT Whole Abdomen– evaluation of liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, intestines and major vessels.
  • CT KUB – focused scan of kidneys, ureters and urinary bladder, commonly used for kidney stones.
  • HRCT Chest – high resolution CT for fine details of the lungs in ILD, TB, fibrosis, etc.
  • CECT Chest– contrast enhanced CT chest to study lungs, mediastinum, vessels and tumours.
  • NCCT Brain– non-contrast CT brain usually done in stroke, head injury and sudden headache.
  • CT Brain – detailed CT of brain, sometimes with contrast depending on indication.
  • CECT Brain – contrast enhanced CT to look for tumours, infections, abscess, etc.
  • CT Urography – evaluation of kidneys, ureters, bladder and urinary tract with contrast.

We also perform other specialised CT studies such as CT PNS, CT temporal bone, CT angiography and more, depending on your doctor’s requirement.

When Is a CT Scan Advised?

Your doctor may recommend a CT Scan for:

  • Severe or unexplained headache
  • Stroke symptoms (weakness, difficulty speaking, facial droop)
  • Head injury or trauma
  • Persistent chest pain or breathlessness
  • Chronic cough or suspected lung disease
  • Abdominal pain, suspected stones or tumours
  • Unexplained weight loss, fever or swellings
  • Pre-surgical planning and follow-up

How Is a CT Scan Performed?

  • You will be asked to lie down on a comfortable CT table.
  • The table moves slowly through the CT scanner – a large ring-shaped machine.
  • You may be asked to hold your breath for a few seconds for clear images.
  • For contrast scans, a dye is injected through a vein in your arm.
  • The entire scan usually takes 5–15 minutes depending on the body part.

The procedure is painless. Our staff will be with you throughout the scan.

Preparation for CT Scan

Scans Usually Requiring Fasting & Contrast

  • CT Whole Abdomen / CECT Abdomen
  • CECT Chest
  • CECT Brain
  • CT Urography

For these tests, you may be asked to fast for 4–6 hours and bring recent kidney function tests (KFT). Our team will guide you at the time of booking.

Scans Usually Without Fasting

  • NCCT Brain
  • CT KUB
  • HRCT Chest
  • CT PNS and most non-contrast scans

Always inform the doctor or technician if you are pregnant, diabetic, or have any allergy to contrast dye.

Is CT Scan Safe?

CT uses a small dose of X-ray radiation. The benefits of accurate diagnosis usually far outweigh the risks, especially in emergencies. We use protocols that aim to keep radiation as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).

  • Not advised in pregnancy unless absolutely necessary.
  • Kidney function is checked before giving contrast.
  • Contrast allergy history is always taken.
