The Procedure
Registration & Screening
We check your prescription and creatinine report, and ask about allergies, asthma, diabetes and kidney problems.
Water & IV Line
You may be asked to drink water. A small cannula is placed in a vein in your arm.
Scanning in Phases
A plain scan is followed by contrast injection and further scans, including a delayed scan after several minutes. You wait on or near the table between scans.
Observation
You rest briefly, the cannula is removed, and you can eat and go home. Drink plenty of water for the rest of the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CT Urography the same as IVP?
It has largely replaced the older IVP (X-ray urography). CT Urography gives clearer, more detailed pictures of the whole urinary tract.
How is it different from CT KUB?
CT KUB is a quick plain scan for stones. CT Urography uses contrast and several phases to show the lining of the kidneys, ureters and bladder, which is needed when looking for growths or the cause of blood in urine.
Why do I need a creatinine test?
Contrast is removed by the kidneys. The creatinine test helps us confirm it is safe for you.
I am diabetic and take metformin. What should I do?
Tell us and your doctor when booking. Depending on your kidney function, your doctor may advise pausing metformin for a short time after the scan.
How long does it take?
Plan for about an hour, including screening, the delayed scan and a short rest afterwards.
