USG of Chest in Bihar
Chest ultrasound at JP Diagnostic for pleural effusion, lung consolidation, and chest wall evaluation — serving Patna, Gaya & Muzaffarpur.
What is Chest Ultrasound?
A bedside or clinic-based ultrasound examination of the chest wall, pleura, and superficial lung parenchyma. It is the first-line imaging for pleural effusion and an excellent adjunct to chest X-ray and CT for lung and chest wall pathology.
Pleural Evaluation
Detects and quantifies pleural effusion, loculations, pleural thickening, and guides diagnostic or therapeutic tapping.
Guided Procedures
Real-time guidance for pleural tap, chest drain insertion, and biopsy of chest wall masses — improving safety and accuracy.
Lung & Chest Wall
Evaluates lung consolidation, interstitial syndrome, pneumothorax, chest wall masses, and rib fractures.
When Do You Need Chest Ultrasound?
Pleural Conditions
- Suspected pleural effusion on X-ray
- Shortness of breath with dullness on percussion
- Empyema or complicated parapneumonic effusion
- Malignant pleural effusion
- Tuberculous pleuritis
- Recurrent pleural effusion
Lung & Parenchyma
- Lung consolidation (pneumonia)
- Interstitial syndrome (pulmonary edema, ARDS)
- Suspected pneumothorax (bedside emergency)
- Post-traumatic lung contusion
- Near-drowning assessment
Chest Wall & Rib
- Chest wall mass or swelling
- Rib fracture (especially cartilaginous)
- Sternal fracture
- Costochondritis (Tietze syndrome)
- Post-thoracotomy evaluation
Guided Interventions
- Pleural fluid aspiration (diagnostic/therapeutic)
- Chest drain insertion guidance
- Pleural biopsy
- Empyema cavity drainage
- Pre-procedure site marking
The Procedure
Total time: 15 to 30 minutes. Usually performed at bedside or in the ultrasound room.
Check-in & Positioning
Bring chest X-ray or CT reports. Patient sits upright or lies on the side. The radiologist examines the chest clinically and identifies the area of interest.
Chest Ultrasound
Systematic scanning of the chest wall, pleural line, and intercostal spaces. Effusion depth measured, septations identified. Lung sliding assessed for pneumothorax. Chest wall masses characterized.
Report & Next Steps
Detailed report with effusion size, loculations, and recommendations for tapping, drainage, or further imaging (CT chest).
How to Prepare
✅ Do’s
- Bring recent chest X-ray and CT reports
- Bring previous pleural fluid analysis reports
- Wear clothing that allows easy chest access
- Inform about blood thinners or bleeding disorders
- Bring coagulation profile if tapping is planned
❌ Don’ts
- Do not apply creams or powders on the chest
- Do not skip bringing prior imaging for comparison
- Do not eat a heavy meal if procedure is planned
Duration & Report Timing
| Scan Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| Chest USG (Diagnostic) | 15 – 25 minutes |
| Chest USG + Pleural Tap | 30 – 45 minutes |
| Chest USG (Bedside/Emergency) | 10 – 15 minutes |
| Chest USG + Drain Insertion | 45 – 60 minutes |
Safety & Risks
Chest ultrasound is safe and highly effective for pleural and chest wall evaluation.
- Zero radiation exposure (unlike X-ray/CT)
- Can be performed at bedside
- Safe for repeated monitoring
- Real-time guidance reduces procedure complications
- Air in lungs limits deep parenchymal assessment
- Obesity and chest wall thickness may reduce quality
- Rib shadows create acoustic shadows
- Cannot evaluate deep lung tissue (air obscures)
- Mediastinal structures not well visualized
- Hilar masses may be obscured by lung air
- Small pneumothorax may be missed
