What is Renal Colour Doppler?
A specialized ultrasound examination using colour and spectral Doppler to assess blood flow in the renal arteries, veins, and intrarenal vessels — essential for diagnosing renovascular hypertension and monitoring kidney transplants.
Renal Arteries
Detects renal artery stenosis (RAS), fibromuscular dysplasia, and atherosclerotic disease causing secondary hypertension.

When Do You Need Renal Doppler?
Hypertension & Vascular
- Severe or resistant hypertension (on >3 drugs)
- Hypertension onset before age 30 or after 55
- Abdominal bruit on examination

The Procedure
Total time: 30 to 60 minutes. Fasting may be required.
Check-in & History
Bring blood pressure records, kidney function tests (creatinine, urea), and previous imaging. Our radiologist reviews medications and symptoms.
Doppler Examination
Grayscale ultrasound evaluates kidney size, echotexture, and hydronephrosis. Colour Doppler assesses main renal artery, segmental, interlobar, and arcuate arteries. Resistive index (RI) calculated. Spectral Doppler measures peak systolic velocity and acceleration time.
Report & Referral
Detailed report with RI values, velocity measurements, and recommendations for CT angiography, MR angiography, or nephrology referral.
How to Prepare
✅ Do’s
- Fast for 6-8 hours (reduces bowel gas interference)
- Take morning medications with small sips of water
- Bring recent creatinine and electrolyte reports
- Bring previous ultrasound, CT, or angiography reports
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing
❌ Don’ts
- Do not eat a heavy meal before the scan
- Do not smoke or chew tobacco before scan (causes vasoconstriction)
- Do not skip bringing blood pressure records
