What is Limb Colour Doppler?
A comprehensive ultrasound examination using colour and spectral Doppler to evaluate blood flow in the arteries and veins of the upper and lower limbs — essential for diagnosing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral arterial disease, and venous insufficiency.

The Procedure
Total time: 30 to 60 minutes per limb.
Check-in & History
Bring previous Doppler reports, medication list (especially blood thinners), and surgical history. Blood pressure checked in both arms.
Doppler Examination
Grayscale and colour Doppler from groin to ankle (lower limb) or axilla to wrist (upper limb). Arterial waveforms, velocities, and calcifications assessed. Venous compressibility, reflux, and flow patterns evaluated.
Report & ABI
Ankle-brachial index calculated if indicated. Detailed report with Doppler findings, waveform analysis, and referral to vascular surgeon if needed.
How to Prepare
✅ Do’s
- Wear loose, easily removable clothing
- Bring previous Doppler or angiography reports
- Bring list of current medications
- Wear comfortable shoes (you may walk for ABI)
- Inform if you have had recent limb surgery
❌ Don’ts
- Do not apply lotions or oils on legs before scan
- Do not wear compression stockings to the appointment
- Do not smoke 2 hours before (affects vascular tone)
