USG KUB in Bihar
Specialized kidney, ureter, and bladder ultrasound at JP Diagnostic. Detects stones, hydronephrosis, renal cysts, and bladder masses without radiation — the first-line imaging for urinary complaints across Patna, Gaya & Muzaffarpur.
What is a USG KUB?
A focused ultrasound examination of the Kidneys, Ureters, and Bladder using high-frequency sound waves to evaluate the urinary system for stones, obstruction, masses, and structural abnormalities.
Kidney Evaluation
Assesses kidney size, cortical thickness, hydronephrosis, cysts, stones, and masses. Doppler evaluates renal blood flow and resistive index.
Ureter & Bladder
Visualizes the ureteric orifices, vesicoureteric junction, bladder wall thickness, trabeculations, diverticula, and intraluminal masses.
Stone Detection
Detects kidney stones (>3mm), hydronephrosis from obstruction, and post-void residual. Guides further CT KUB when needed.

USG KUB vs CT KUB vs X-Ray KUB
Choosing the right modality for urinary tract evaluation ensures optimal stone detection and patient safety.
| Feature | USG KUB | CT KUB | X-Ray KUB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radiation | ✓ Zero | ✕ Present | ✕ Present |
| Stone Detection | ✓ Good (>3mm) | ✓ Excellent (all sizes) | ✕ Radiopaque only |
| Hydronephrosis | ✓ Excellent | ✓ Excellent | ✕ Cannot Assess |
| Ureteric Stones | ✕ Often Missed | ✓ Excellent | ✕ Limited |
| Cost in Bihar | ₹700 – ₹1,200 | ₹3,000 – ₹5,000 | ₹300 – ₹500 |
| Pregnancy Safe | ✓ Safe | ✕ Avoid | ✕ Avoid |
USG KUB is the first-line choice for suspected kidney stones, hydronephrosis, and recurrent UTIs — especially in pregnancy and children. CT KUB is reserved for equivocal cases or pre-operative planning.
The Procedure
What to expect during your USG KUB at JP Diagnostic. Total time: 15 to 25 minutes.
Check-in & Full Bladder
Arrive with a full bladder (drink 4-5 glasses of water 1 hour prior). The sonographer confirms your symptoms and reviews any prior stone history or reports.
Kidney & Ureter Scan
You lie supine and on your sides. The transducer is moved across the back (flank) and abdomen to image both kidneys, measure their size, assess cortical thickness, and trace the ureters down to the bladder.
Bladder Evaluation
The bladder is evaluated for wall thickness, stones, masses, and diverticula. Post-void residual may be measured if requested. Color Doppler assesses ureteric jets.
Post-Scan & Results
Gel is wiped off. You may empty your bladder. The radiologist reviews images and prepares your report with stone size, location, and hydronephrosis grade.
How to Prepare
Proper preparation is essential for clear visualization of the urinary bladder and kidneys.
✅ Do’s
- Drink 4-5 glasses of water 1 hour before the scan
- Hold urine and do not empty bladder before arrival
- Wear loose, comfortable two-piece clothing
- Bring previous KUB imaging and stone analysis reports
- Inform staff if you have a urinary catheter
- Bring your doctor’s prescription and clinical history
❌ Don’ts
- Do not empty bladder before the scan
- Do not drink coffee, tea, or alcohol (diuretic effect)
- Do not eat a heavy meal immediately before (causes bowel gas)
- Do not apply lotions or oils on the abdomen or back
- Do not skip hydration (dehydration obscures kidneys)
- Do not take diuretics before the examination
Special Cases
| Condition | Required Preparation |
|---|---|
| Children | Feed normally; ensure adequate hydration; bring comfort item |
| Pregnant Women | No fasting; full bladder essential; inform gestational age |
| Catheterized Patients | Clamp catheter 1-2 hours before; unclamp after pre-void scan |
| Renal Failure | Fluid restriction may apply; consult nephrologist before hydration |
| Post-ESWL / Surgery | Bring operative notes; ideal timing 2-4 weeks post-procedure |
Duration & Report Timing
We understand the urgency of renal colic and urinary emergencies and prioritize rapid reporting.
| Scan Type | Duration |
|---|---|
| USG KUB (Routine) | 15 – 20 minutes |
| USG KUB with PVR | 20 – 25 minutes |
| USG KUB with Doppler | 25 – 30 minutes |
| Pediatric KUB | 15 – 25 minutes |
| Post-ESWL Follow-up | 15 – 20 minutes |
Safety & Risks
KUB ultrasound is extremely safe and suitable for all patient populations.
- Zero radiation exposure
- Safe in pregnancy and children
- No contrast injection needed
- No recovery time required
- Can be repeated frequently for stone monitoring
- Full bladder causes temporary discomfort
- Pressure on tender flank may cause pain
- Cold gel sensation
- Obesity may limit deep structure visualization
- May miss small ureteric stones (<3mm)
- Mid-ureter often obscured by bowel gas
- Cannot determine stone composition
- Operator-dependent accuracy
💡 Clinical Note: If USG KUB is inconclusive but clinical suspicion for stones remains high, our radiologist will recommend a non-contrast CT KUB — the gold standard for stone detection and pre-operative planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about USG KUB in Bihar.
USG KUB detects most kidney stones larger than 3mm and all stones causing hydronephrosis. However, very small stones, mid-ureteric stones, and those obscured by bowel gas may be missed. CT KUB detects nearly 100% of stones regardless of size or composition.
A full bladder pushes bowel loops away from the pelvis, creating an acoustic window to visualize the bladder, lower ureters, and prostate. It also allows assessment of bladder wall thickness and post-void residual if needed.
Hydronephrosis is swelling of the kidney due to urine backup from obstruction. Ultrasound is excellent at detecting hydronephrosis, often before symptoms worsen. It grades severity from mild (pelviectasis) to severe (calyceal ballooning and cortical thinning).
Yes, absolutely. USG KUB is the imaging modality of choice for suspected kidney stones in pregnant women because it avoids radiation. However, the full bladder requirement may be uncomfortable in late pregnancy.
USG KUB cost in Bihar ranges from ₹700 to ₹1,200. At JP Diagnostic, we offer competitive pricing with EMI and insurance cashless options. Call us for exact pricing.
Preliminary reports within 30 minutes, final signed reports within 2 hours. Emergency renal colic cases are prioritized for immediate reporting.
USG KUB is radiation-free, cheaper, and excellent for initial screening and hydronephrosis. CT KUB provides superior detail, detects all stone sizes, maps exact location, and is used for surgical planning. USG is first-line; CT is confirmatory.
JP Diagnostic offers high-resolution ultrasound, automated bladder volume measurement, experienced radiologists, and NABH-accredited standards across Patna, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur.

Expert Opinions
When do leading urologists recommend a USG KUB?
For any patient presenting with flank pain or hematuria, USG KUB is my first investigation. It reliably detects hydronephrosis and most stones while avoiding radiation. I reserve CT KUB for cases where ultrasound is inconclusive or surgical planning is needed.
In pregnant women with suspected renal colic, USG KUB is the only safe imaging option. The ability to detect obstruction and guide conservative management without radiation makes it indispensable in obstetric urology.
